Title: Draining the brake fluid
Post by: DENNIS P NOLAN on December 12, 2010, 12:27:58 PM
What's the best method-?
Bleed each individual wheel cylinder-??
Is there a 'best' method-?? to evacuate the entire system-?
I don't want to have the garage floor catch a bunch of old fluid-so, any info is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!! Dennis

You might want to check some sites that cover hobbyist car racing, at least some of those guys flush the system after every racing weekend. My recollection talking with one of those people was that he had two pressure bleeders, each with the same type of brake fluid but with different colors (I guess you can get that from racing suppliers). He did a standard pressure bleed (furthest wheel cylinder first) until the new color fluid ran cleanly through.

If you put a hose on the bleeder screw and run it into a large enough container, you shouldn't get fluid on your floor.

Do you want to drain the system or just flush it with new brake fluid.

If you are talking about a flush, you would use the standard bleeding procedure until the new fluid flows free. As Tod said, use a tube to a container and start from the line furthest from the master.

If you want to evacuate the whole system, I would think you would need to pump the master until it starts sucking air. After that you may need to an air pump on the master or a vacuum on the wheel cylinder.

Why, may I ask, do you want to evacuate the system?
