I am new to the game. I am trying to replace the 3 glass panels on the dashboard of my 40 Plymouth Deluxe.P1o Business Coupe. Have removed the 5 clips securing the cluster to the dash, loosened oil line, loosened speedometer cable. I have been able to pull the cluster out a few inches, to almost clearing the dash. For the life of me, I cannot see how the bezel that holds the glass, seperates from the thin steel casing of the instruments. so that the glass can be removed and replaced. As it is a casting, I am treading cautiously.
Sure do appreciate any input from anyone more knowledgeable than me. Thanks.
From what I remember on the 40, and what is true on the 41 is that there are small fold overs on the rear of the panel that hold the glass in place. A steady hand and patience is needed to gently lift these areas in several places. Once that is completed the glass falls fre. Again, caution!
This is what I remember from 10 years or so ago when I had my 40.
Thank you Lindsay. Will give it a try. Bob C.
Bob,
Can you post some photos of your '40?
I have a '40 P-10 Business coupe that I have owned for 22 years this month, a driver, not a show car
Thanks and good luck with your '40.
Bob
Well, I tackled the instrument cluster on the 40 Plymouth. This is how it is done. 1. Remove the six clips in rear of cluster that sit on threaded studs. 2. Disconnect Oil Pressure gauge line at the gauge. 3. Remove the speedometer cable. 4.Now remove the same threaded studs that the clips were on. They have a elongated nut for gripping. 5. Remove the bulb line from the Hi Beam indicator. The metal box holding the glass and the bezel should come straight out in one piece. The gauges remain behind in the dash. The glass will then simply lift out.
I used, sparingly, a few tabs of masking tape to hold the glass frames to the box. Use it on the metal not the glass. sure helped preventing ithe glass from falling out when assembling
I had also unscrewed the piece that holds the bulb assembly for the high beams to facilitate wiggling the unit out. Be sure to put it back BEFORE reassembling back into the dash board. (Do not embarass me by asking how I know! LOL)
Hi Bob. I do not have any presentable pics yet at this point. I have the car stripped of all bright work, running boards and a temporary primer coat on it. Right now it is nothing special to look at. Once I get a bit more recognizeable I will post a series of pics. Please bear with me. Bob
Not a problem, I can do that :)
