Title: '35 leaf spring shackle and bushing.
Post by: wretched4one on February 08, 2010, 08:33:09 PM
I have a question on installing the rear leaf spring shackle and bushing. The shackle is threaded and the bushing is threaded inside and out for going into the spring. How do you start them to get them in evenly?

You need a service manual. :)

From the 1936-42 Factory Service Manual (1933-35 is similar):

QuotePlace a 13/16 inch gauge between the spring shackle and the frame side rail and a 7/8 inch gauge between the end of the spring and the spring shackle. Then tighten the shackle bushings and remove the gauges (fig. 6)

So basically you are putting the spring in its correct position and the "U" part of the bracket in the correct position inside the spring and bracket on the frame. then you screw in the bushings.

I think I have that one. Not much in it on the front end. I believe it changed in '36.

This is takem from a 1935  MoToRs AUTO REPAIR MANUAL    Plymouth 1935-40 threaded bushing type alignment of rear leaf springs is accomplished by threading the bushings into the shackles so that there is a specified distance between the bushing and the shackle , the adjustments should be checked accurately by using a guage of the proper thickness . from memory there should be an illustration of the guage in your manual , with the measurements , i made my own guages 10-12 years ago and i,m sure that is where i got all the details from
