Title: 1940 front brake hanging up
Post by: 30plyman on March 20, 2006, 12:12:57 AM
i have a 40 Plymouth with a brake problem, the brakes on the front pass. side start to hang up and drag after it gets hot from a few stops. the car had been sitting for 30 years, or so i was told, anyway i replaced the wheel cylinders, blew out the line, rebuilt the master, had the shoes relined, and replaced the rubber hoses. i asked around some and was told that there was air in the system and that it was getting hot and expanding. well after bleeding a gallon of brake fluid through it, i still have the problem. then i was told that the new rubber hose was bad, so i took it off and put it on the other side of the car, still the pass. side drags. then i put two return springs on it and it still drags. then someone suggested that the brake pedal was adjusted to tight, so i backed the push rod off a little and tried it, still it drags. then someone suggested that the shoes were set up to tight, i readjusted them and still it drags. does anybody have any suggestions? anyway any help is appreciated

I had a very similar problem a couple years back. Yep, frustration did set in, but when the trouble was found the item was the master cylinder. It was getting hung up on a tiny burr after the rebuild from Whitepost Restoration. After the item came back, it was smooth stopping (and going). This is only my experience, hope it helps you with yours.

Can u tell if it is the front or rear shoe, or both?

Last summer the front brakes on the driver's side of my 1940 Plymouth would squeel loudly when I would come to a stop, also when I would start to take off, you could tell the brake was hung up also.
Come to find out that I had a build up of brake dust, plus I readjusted the brake shoes on the driver's side, to date no more hang up or squeeling when I apply the brakes.
Hope this helps,
Bob
