Title: Steering Wheel Refinish
Post by: Don St Peter on March 17, 2006, 10:43:05 PM
I have completed all the prep work on my 40 Ply steering wheel and ready to paint. Can someone recommend paint and color. As I do not have spray gun etc., I was thinking about the aerosol paint like they use for appliance touch ups, but then comes the color issue. I really can't see sending it off to a Hemmings advertizer, but may have to relent.
Thanks in Advance
Don

Check with your auto paint store-sometimes they will make up a spray can if the color u want is one that they have. U probably ought to use the same brand of primer.

I have had good success in refinishing steering wheels by using a product for the repair of Vinyl Bumpers to fill the cracks, sanding and prepping just as you would anything else, but avoid a buildup of primer, then topcoat with acrylic enamel such as Dupont's  Centari.

The wheel must first be cleaned of any wax or grease  and the simplest way is to leave it outside for a few months during the rainy season, but if this is not practical, there are commercial products which will do the job.

As to colour, for the 49, 50 and some 51 Plymouth, Sahara Beige which is a 72 Chrysler colour is an exact match.     DPollock
