Title: 1980 Omni
Post by: Bob on March 12, 2006, 12:00:13 PM
This morning my neice's boyfriend asked me if the 1980 Omni had power brakes.
I was unable to answer his question.
Hard to believe that this car is now considered an antique, or atleast it is over 25 years old.
He would like to convert it to power brakes if possible.
Thanks in advance,
Bob

I had a 82 TC3 Tursimo (sporty two door version of the Omni/Horizon platform) that I bought new in the fall of 81. I had to special order to get it with non-power brakes and non-power steering. Slightly different year and model, but I'd guess that unless it was a "loss leader" off the dealer lot, it came with PS and PB.

However, that car is so small and light it does not need PS or PB.

I also believe that Power Brakes and Steering were pretty much standard on the 1980 Omni/Horizons.  I had a 1980 Horizon and a 1984 Omni.  I now own a 1983 Scamp and both that and the parts truck I had were equiped with PS and PB.  I just checked the 1980 Horizon dealer brochure - both were listed as options in 1978 and 1980.  It was probably not till about 1986 or 1987 when the Japanese cars all added them as standard on their cars that they became standard on American cars.

I also own a 1983 Scamp, PS & PB.  I have spent many hours in wrecking yards looking at interchangable Omni/Horizon cars to find Scamp parts.  They ALL had power brakes.  You should have no problem in finding the parts needed to do the conversion.  As Tod Fitch stated, you may have a very rare and valuable factory modification.
