Title: Powerflite leak...how do I stop it?
Post by: LarryW on March 12, 2006, 09:56:47 AM
I'm trying to keep my Son-in-law from selling his beautifully restored 56 Savoy.  He is discusted with it because he has been unable to stop a leak coming from the push button cable that enters the side of the trans.  The rubber coating has cracked and just kinda fallen off, and I suspect that when it is parked for long periods, as the converter drains down into the pan, as the fluid level reaches the level of the cable, it just leaks onto the floor.  What can I do to this cable to stop this?  Is there a "O" ring or something that needs replacing...can I cover the cable with "heat shrink"...do I have to replace the cable, and if so where can I get one.

Thanks for your help...I really hate to see this car leave the family.

When I had my power flite rebuilt about two years ago the shop simply slid a section of hose over the cable while it was disconnect from the transmission.  The hose was than clamped to the metal caseing of the shifter cable at the transmission end and a second clamp was fastened about 12 to 18 inches up the cable.  Has held up well so far.
