Title: WANTED - STEERING BOX AND POST 51 52 PLYMOUTH
Post by: 52plym on August 10, 2009, 06:17:22 PM
After 5 years, I finally have the Blue/Gray Belvedere up, running good, and ready to cruise.....EXCEPT the steering sticks badly in the 12 o'clock position.  I checked and the box was dry, so I filled it with penetrating oil thinking that it might clean off the gears.  No luck, it is worse than ever and a real danger to drive.  Does anyone have any idea where I might locate a decent steering box ?  Any suggestion appreciated. (I was planning on the Maryland meet, but that is out of the question with this problem !)

Check Moore's in Rapid City, SD and Len Dawson.  Len has an ad in the bulletin and Moore's phone number is 605-348-4926

Hope this helps,
Bob

Before you give up on it, it sounds like someone has screwed the adjustment down too tight.  Back it off a turn and see if there is any improvement.  There should be minimal lost motion at dead centre but at the extremes it will be quite noticeable. This is normal.

It would be a good idea to pull the pitman arm and remove the sector so you can wash out the box and check the worm and roller for wear.  Follow the shop manual's direction when adjusting.
