Title: Want more info about the '70 Fury Gran Coupe
Post by: 70grancoupe on May 21, 2009, 05:54:59 PM
My dad and I recently stumbled upon a '70 Fury Gran Coupe (walnut with the paisley top) that an old lady had in a shed out next to her house. We were there to load some old rusted junked cars for scrap and caught a glimpse through the door. We asked the lady's 65 year old son about the car and he told us that the old man bought it brand new in '70 and when the man died some years ago they stuck it in the shed. Long story short, it seemed to be in good condition so we bought it . Got it home and cleaned up, checked the fluids, put in some new gas and a battery and it fired right up! After a good wash we found out the top was still in almost perfect condition and pretty much everything worked!

Anyway, this car is in pretty amazing original condition and I am wanting to find out a bit more about it or hear from other owners with the same model. Found a couple of websites with a bit of info on it, but not much else. We didn't exactly have this car in mind when we were in the market for a fixer-upper. How many of these are out there?

Here are a couple of photos of the car. These are of the day we brought her home (way we found it and then washed)

Nice looking Plymouth. If you want to post the VIN, or email me direct (you can use xxx for the last three numbers if you want), I can probably provide some info on how it was equipped from the factory.

Regards, and have fun with your find,
Pat O'Connor

The Fury Gran Coupe was based on the Fury II 2-door sedan, introduced in January, 1970, and was equipped with the following items -

- Sport Fury grille with hidden headlamps
- V5J - vinyl-insert side trim
- W11 - deluxe wheel covers
- T46 - G78x15" whitewall tires
- V1J - special paisley pattern walnut vinyl roof
- FT8 - Walnut Metallic paint
- walnut vinyl interior trim with paisley style inserts
- vinyl split-back bench seat with folding centre armrest
- G24 - ventless door glass
- S77 - power steering
- B51 - power brakes
- R11 - AM radio
- A01 - light package
- G33 - Outside remote driver's mirror
- S78 - 3-spoke steering wheel with horn ring
- instrument panel wood-grain applique
- G11 - tinted glass *
- H51 - air conditioning *
- D32 - Torqueflite
- E61 - 383-cid V8 with 2-bbl carb
- "Fury" side nameplates without the "II"
- "Gran Coupe" nameplates on the C pillar

* - item could be deleted

Other options included -
- all other Fury paint/vinyl roof combinations that were compatible with green or charcoal/black vinyl interior trims
- Deluxe AM radio or Solid State AM radio with Stereo Tape player or Multiplex AM/FM radio
- Sport wheel covers or rallye road wheels or chromed styled road wheels
- woodgrained steering wheel
- 2-spoke rim blow steering wheel

The VIN would not show what options are on the car, other than engine, although the data plate should.? I cannot locate the "A" sales code for the package, though.? ?VIN should be PL21L0pxxxxxx, where "p" is the letter for the assembly plant.

The 1969-70 Fury 2-door sedans were based on the formal 2-door hardtop (actually the Fury/Polara/Monaco 4-door hardtop roofline) and thus used the Fury 2-door hardtop doors.? ?

The car sold in two packages.  Most were the "A" car at $4216.00.  Without tinted glass and air conditioning, it was a "B" car at $3833.00.  Production for the Gran Coupe was not recorded separately and is reported with the Fury II.

I don't know how much you paid for that car but they are becoming very popular - the fuselage body Plymouth and Dodge cars are going up in value every month.

If it is mostly original and you do not want it, I would suggest advertising it.  Most of those early 70 "C" body cars were stripped for the drive train or demo derby cars - the engines were what most people wanted - now they regret that a fantastic road car was destroyed so a "B" body car could get a bigger engine.

Nice car.

Thanks for all the replies. This is definitely confirming that it seems that most everything is still original about this car.

Nice car.

We gave $2,500 for it, so considering that it ran well from the get go and wasn't beat up, we thought it was a pretty good deal. I am already growing attached to it, so I doubt I'll get rid of it anytime soon...but who knows? We are still trying to figure out what it's worth!

Glass doesn't look very tinted to me, but according to the code it is...and it does have the A/C. So, I suppose it was the "A" car...

Thanks for all the code meanings as well Chryco. Underneath the backseat bottom I found a printout with the title "Chrysler Corporation Car Production Broadcast". It has all the build codes and sales codes on it and what you have given me deciphers about 75% of it. Very nice! As for the VIN, it's PL21L0D243XXX

If any of you are interested, I put a few more recent pictures at photobucket. The wheels and tires are swapped out (though keeping originals) to make it look a little meaner and we also changed the exhaust, but thats about all that has been done to her. Anyway, here is the link http://s69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/jhrix23/Fury/

Thanks again to everyone!

Just out of curiosity, what are the "A" codes on the broadcast sheet?? One of them should be for the "Gran Fury Coupe" package.? Of all the stuff I have there is no listing for such a code.

I'm not exactly sure which code that is. Do you mean this code?

I just realized that you said, "Gran Fury Coupe" package. I didn't know if you just misspoke or I don't know what I'm talking about, but just in case, this car is a Fury Gran Coupe. The Gran Fury came out later. Anyway, I just thought I would point that out in case there was a misunderstanding. Thanks again!

Yes, that's it!?

The A01 is for the Light Package while the list I have says the A98 is for a "Fury Spring Package".? ?Well, it's obvious now that should read "Fury Gran Coupe Package".

Thanks for helping sort that out!
