Title: Service Reference Books
Post by: mvair on February 19, 2006, 09:43:12 PM
I picked up an item I had never seen at a recent swap meet.? Below is a picture of a "Service Reference Book" published by Chrysler Corporation in 1949.? This one is marked as Volume 2 Number 7.? It is 30 pages of everything anyone would need to know about rebuilding Chrysler transmissions.? It includes details about what to tell customers who opt not to complete a recommended rebuild.? There is even a quiz at the end emphasizing the most important elements of a rebuild.

An example of the detailed text about assembling the cluster gear: "Coat the steel washers with a little oil so they'll stay in place, and put them on the gear first.? (The roller bearings would cut through the bronze washers if you put the bronze washers on first.) Now put a little oil on the bronze washers and stick them to the steel ones. You're using oil instead of grease because grease takes up too much space, when you're working with clearances in thousandths of an inch."

This is just the kind of detail a non-professional mechanic like me needs!

Does anyone have the complete series of these pamphlets?? Can someone post the titles of all the pamphlets in the series?

Thanks!

Here is a link to the Imperial Web page site that includes much factory liturature...

Your manual is part of the series listed under Master Service Technicians Conference.

I notice they do not have your manual, maybe there would be a way you could share that with them so we could all see it?

Thanks for the link.  I checked out the collection.  What a wealth of information!  I also emailed the webmaster and offered to loan them my book if they want to scan it for their website.

Does anyone have the Plymouth Service Manuals avilable in digital format?  I have a '41 manual that is a great resource; however, I have noticed that some years include better pictures and descriptions of service information than other years. It would be nice to see a range of service manual years to see if the needed information is better described in one year over another without having to purchase several manuals.  The  composite manual does this to some degree, but the pictures and information included by the editor is not always what I need.

Thanks again for the link to the Imperial website.

I know the guy who runs this site.

http://www.moparmanuals.com

His prices are not cheap - $45-$65 for most shop manual but his are licensed and his are very well done.  I had him do the 1963 Turbine Car shop manual I own for me - it is available from his site if you are interested.  If you order anything from him, tell him you are a Plymouth Owner's club member and Mark Olson at turbinecar.com sent you to him - he may give you a discount.  I could look into that officially for club members if enough people want access to CD - Roms.

Another good source for manuals is MoTors. They do a good job of complimenting the shop manual. They're often available at a reasonable price on Ebay.
