Title: 1928 Plymouth Vehicle mounted 4 wheel brake warning sign.
Post by: hemibadfish on September 25, 2008, 06:03:42 PM
Has anyone ever seen a vehicle mounted "Equipped with 4 wheel brakes" warning sign? Apparently ??? the sign mounted on the rear of the vehicle to warn other motorists that the car was equipped with four wheel brakes and may stop quicker. Does anyone know where I could get one of these signs or have a good phot of one to get one made?

I recall seeing a photo of one many years ago. If you have a source I'd like to get one too.

I've seen photos but can't recall if I saw one on a car at a show or not....needless to say, I'd like to have one as well!

This is the first I heard of this sign.  Does anyone know what they actually looked like?  If I can find out what they looked like, I would make myself a reproduction of it.

I vaguely recall a triangle, point side up, with those old style round glass reflectors bordering the edge. But if that is correct, I am not sure how the lettering for "caution four wheel brakes" would have fit that shape.

I suspect that "it" might have been "them" as it would not surprise me if there were multiple manufacturers each with their own design.

My reason for desiring one is that there is no "on or after" date for requiring at least one rear reflector on cars in California and the tail light on my 33 does not have a reflectorized area. At present I have a bicycle reflector mounted but I would like something more vintage looking.

Hi Tod,

I too worry about rear illumination on my '36. Fortunately, Illinois license plates (including antique plates) are reflectorized, which helps some.

I've also mounted a large bicycle reflector and a reflectorized Chicago Motor Club (metal) emblem above the rear plate.

Even so, I don't drive the '36 after dark if I can help it.

Regards,

Pat O'Connor

Too bad it does not have reflectors. Oh well, there might be another one out there someplace.

So this would mean in a situation where you were not driving a Plymouth, but rather following one, in a panic stop situation, the side of your car would impact the rear of the freshly stopped Plymouth.  But you would have been duely notified as to why by the brief glimpse of this sign out the side of your Buick, Oakland, or (insert others here).

Funny how you now see the same shaped symbol in the slow moving vehicle universal symbol on the back of all those touring
Model A's.

I was mentioning this sign to a friend of mine at a car show yesterday.  He informed me that the early Rickenbacker automobiles had 4-wheel mechanical brakes in the early '20's.  He said he had seen a sign similar to these on one at a car show.
