I have my '37 P-4 disassembled for painting. My painter wants to spray the fenders while on the car to avoid any difference in paint shade or appearance. Is it OK to do the final fender installation and paint the fender welt or should I temporarily install fenders and remove them to install the welt leaving the welt black and unpainted? Not a show car.
I am presently restoring a 48 Plymouth P15, also as a driver not as a Car Show Queen.? I am however installing my rear fenders by using washers to space them away from the car body.? This way the paint shop can finish the final coat and then I can remove the fenders with out damaging or chipping the finish coat.? This way I can install the welting and reinstall the painted fenders.? If you use washers make sure they don?t protrude all the way to the painted edge.? You don?t want any chips at the edge when you remove the fenders.

I agree with Chet. Although I don't understand the concern about painting them seperately. Why the fenders couldn't be put on horses or suspeded from the racks inthe booth and sprayed at the same time from the same paint pot is a question I might ask. I would assume that the parts would be removed for color sand and buffing. Then assemble with the welting, then do the final buffing.
My car is black, the fenders, hood, doors, and trunk lid were done 2 years before the rest of the body and it came out fine.
If the car is a solid color, then it likely wouldn't be a problem to paint it in pieces.
However, if the color is a metallic, then it probably would be a problem to paint it apart. If the metallic lays out differently, then the colors can be different, even if sprayed out of the same paint gun on the same day at the same time.

I think I will use the washers between the car and fender method and install welting later after full paint cure.

If you want the look of body colored welting, Julianos Rod shop makes welting in several colors, and most Ford restoration supply places have it in several colors as well. Juliaos stuff is more fo the Street rod folks while the Ford stuff would be more period correct, if not POC judging atandard correct.
