Title: 49 plymouth right front brake locking up.
Post by: 250super on February 03, 2006, 10:02:59 AM
Question on the right front brake that has two wheel cyl. they recently started to lock that tire up when brekes applied. I have readjusted to back them off but still the same. When I have the drum off and apply the brakes it looks like they are working. by the way when I let off the brake they do let off but takes a little bit. So when I apply the brakes it just yanks to the right. Is the solution to replace the wheel cylinders as I think they are sticky?
Car is tucked away for winter so I want to baby my baby for the winter.

The problem may be on the other side-check for brake fluid on the other side tire for starters

Might be a good idea to replace the brake hose while you're in there.? They can swell on the inside and cause slow or no-return on the brake pedal.

I had thesame problem with my '50. Replaced / rebuilt the wheel cylinders on that wheel and the problem went away.

Make sure that both small holes in your master cylinder are not plugged. If they are plugged it takes a long time for the pressure to release from the wheel cylinders. I had the same problem with my right front brake locking up and after about 15 minutes it would be OK. Took me forever to find the problem but finally did with the help of an old time mechanic. Holes should be just below your filler plug and visible if your brake fluid is clean.
