I am a new member and probably going to ask a lot of stupid questions at first. So here goes.....How do I identify the 1940 Plymouth 2 door sedan I bought, a P9 or P 10??? Ser. or body # 0498296 and the engine # is P9*5526I*..Don't know if it's the original engine. Thanks in advance, dennis
Go to the Home page and look at Owners cars section... You'll find 2 great P10's .... If yours are like those you'll know you have a P10..

The engine number you list was originally shipped in a P9. Like you said it is possible the engine has been changed out.
The original engine number should be stamped on the driver side of the frame where it kicks up over the rear axle.
The "Ser. or body" number you listed is too small to be a mid to late 1930s number, so it is probably a body number off the firewall in the engine compartment. The serial number tag will be on the passenger side from door hinge post. You can look up serial numbers at http://www.ply33.com/Misc/vin to see what the car is and what plant it was built at.
Thanks for the response, I put the wrong number down as ser. number...It is 1386231 and according to that chart you posted the link to it is a P 9 and built in Detroit. So the engine very possibly is the original...Thanks all for your help. dennis
The P9 engine suggests it may be a P9 but you will usually find the original engine number on the frame rail, facing out, above the left rear wheel.
P10s had the following features which were optional on P9s:
hood moulding extends full length and continues all the way under the windows to the rear of the car
radio speaker grille in center of dash even if there is no radio
horn ring
bumperettes on rear bumper
2 sunvisors, two windshield wipers dual trumpet horns (often but not always)
front suspension sway bar
The body tag on the firewall would also have either P9 or P10 followed by the body type ( P10 4DR Sedan)
