Title: 1933 PD wire wheel valve stems
Post by: oldplym on April 21, 2008, 06:31:51 PM
While doing some research I ran across a reference from the November-December '88 Bulletin (issue 173), that I'd never paid attention to before, stating simply that PC wire wheels have valve stem holes in the middle of the wheel and PD wire wheels have the more common (Ford and Chevrolet) angled hole.  I don't believe this to be entirely correct and in addition the parts manual lists PD replacements as either way.  Since my PD came with the hole in the middle of the rim, I always assumed this was the style and over the years acquired several extras when I found them.  As I said, at flea markets the angled hole wheels are much more common and I would pass even good deals by. Is there an official club position on this?  I don't want to spend any more time or money on "incorrect" wheels and at the same time believe there's strong evidence either way.  Comments from other PD owners?

Thanks,
Don

It seems unlikely to me that all 5 of the 17 inch wire wheels on my PD had been replaced prior to my purchase of it. And all 5 have the center, not angled, valve stem hole. So I am inclined to agree with you that wheels with the center valve stem holes were also used on PD.

By the way, I had a hard time finding tubes with the center valve stems last year when I bought new tire. I ended up using some 17 inch motorcycle tubes which worked but the metal valve stem outside diameter is smaller than it should be.

Thanks Tod, I knew I could count on input from you.  Although I hope other PD club members will offer their situation, I'm convinced the "center hole" wheels should be acceptable on the PD's, even more common.  The club judging guidelines don't make any claims either way so maybe it's not an issue at all.  I was just concerned that some things on the printed page have a way of growing into reality.  Reference the current issue of the Bulletin and Earl Buton's article on "Judging".

Thanks again,

Don

OLDPLYM,
I just read your post. (I haven't been on site for a while.) My 33 PD coupe wire wheels have the "center holes." Therefore, I agree with Todfitch that these were probably original rims. Thought you would appreciate hearing from another PD owner.
