Title: '40 Plymouth Speedometer
Post by: Bob on March 15, 2008, 05:00:11 PM
On my car the odometer works fine, but the speed indicator sticks.
I don't find a place to oil the speedometer.

Would I hurt any of the inside workings if I gently added a few drops of sewing machine oil?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

bob check your speedo cable it could also be that , a little thin oil on that wont hurt but only a little as to much can cause the indicator to flick back and forward

Bob, you might be able to hold a hair dryer where the cable goes into it, some times the lubricant  that was used hardens up and will become soft again with a little heat. Wayne of Calif.

I have a similar problem with my '40 p10.  The speedometer cable is free and has plenty of lub.  When the cable was removed from the rear of the speedometer housing, it exposed what appears to be a brass shaft with the square hole in it.  This shaft is very stiff to turn.  I installed a short screwdriver in the square hole and turned it by hand, the speedometer pointer did move slightly indicating that it was not broke.  I tried to use a little lub on the edge of the shaft, but to no avail.  I will be removing the speedometer when the floor is reinstalled and try lubricating it.  I'll keep you posted.
