I just got my engine out of overhaul. What should the cold valve clearance be before I start it for the first time? If no one answers I will go with 6 degrees intake and 8 degrees exhaust.
James
Hi, James,
When you say 'degrees', are you meaning 'thousandths'?
If it was my engine, I'd not set the clearances that tight.....I use .010 (10 thousandths) for intake valves, and .012 (12 thou) for exhaust.
cheers
Carla
Ten on the intake and twelve (thousandths of an inch) on the exhaust works well for a cold setting and is usually quiet enough you don't need to go back in.
I set them by turning the engine until # 6 exhaust is closing and # 6 intake is about to open then adjust both valves on # 1. Then turn until # 5 ex is closing and its intake is about to close then set both valves on #2. And so on down the line.

Carla,
My mistake, I meant .006" intake and .008" exhaust. I will go with what you and David suggested. Thanks a bunch for the help!!
James
Here's a simple procedure for adjusting the valves cold.
