Title: can power steering be added to 56 plymouth?
Post by: Jerry on January 20, 2008, 09:10:13 PM
hi
I have a 2 door savoy.  Can power steering be added?  What years power steering pump would fit?  I assume Dodge would be the same?  How about from a chrysler or desoto? would they also fit?
Know anyone who has one?
Any idea of how many hours labor involved?
thanks

I can not speak as an authority on the subject of PS on a 56 Plym, however, I have had some exposure to PS on the '55/56 Dodge cars and one '56 Plym.
A friend of mine is currently working on two Dodges,  '55/56 Lancer hard tops with the Red Ram Poly V8 engines. The '55 did not have PS, but the '56 does.
We recently parted out a '56 Plym V8 w/PS for the motor and trans, it was an OD car.

DON'T GET ALL FEVERED UP ABOUT THE '56 V8 & OD TRANS. WE PARTED THE CAR OUT IN IDAHO IN LATE OCTOBER, BEFORE WE COULD GET THE PARTS OUT OF IDAHO, WINTER SET IN.  THE PARTS ARE LOCATED  A 1/4 MILE FROM AN IMPROVED ROAD. EASTERN IDAHO IS HAVING ONE OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW FALLS IT HAS HAD IN FORTY YEARS, SO  IT WILL MOST LIKELY BE APRIL BEFORE WE CAN GET INTO THE YARD TO GET THE PARTS. WE COULD GO IN WITH A SNOW MACHINE, HOWEVER, TO ADD TO THE PROBLEM, WE LOADED THE PARTS INTO A '61 DODGE LANCER THAT WE HAVE TO BRING HOME.

I do know that there is a lot of difference between the car with PS and those without. I am speaking about the V8 cars, I have never seen a 6 cyln with PS. I can tell you from experience that if you want to add PS to your car, DO NOT TRY TO BUY THE COMPONENTS FROM SOMEONE UNLESS THEY HAVE EVERYTHING, AND I MEAN EVERYTHING. My advise would be to buy a beater car with factory PS, using it for a donor to convert your car.

A second thought would be to contact Russ Moore at Moore's Auto Wrecking in Rapid City, SD 605 348-4926. Russ will know what will fit what, he is very heavy in pre 1965 Mopar. When they take parts off of a car they will send you every nut, bolt, washer, hose, etc., that held the part in place....Bill
