Title: Matching engine #'s ??
Post by: HalfDollarMayflowe on January 07, 2008, 11:53:51 PM
Unfortunately, my '50 fastback was robbed of her engine...

While searching for a replacement, I came across the POC judging guidelines, where I found that there were evidently 2 different block #'s for 1950; P19 and P20.  I've come across at least 2 P19's (one a business coupe, the other a fastback), both of which are supposedly "all original" with P20 blocks.

While it doesn't seem too far-fetched to believe that a P20 block could have been stuffed into a P19 engine bay by ma' Plymouth, I thought I'd ask.  The POC guidelines seem to indicate a P20 engine in a P19 would be cause for a major deduction.

Anyone got a P19 block laying around?

Regards,

Gary

Gary - there was no such thing as a P19 block.  For whatever reason, engines in both the P19 and P20 series ALL carried the P20 designation.  This wasn't necessarily true in all years where each model had its own engine designation but in 1950, they all were P20 engines.

Forgot to mention - you can find your original engine number stamped into the left rear frame rail.  Remove the left rear wheel/tire - clean the dirt, rust, grunge, etc., and facing you will be the original number stamped into the rail.  And it will start with P20-

I can confirm what has been posted on this topic. If the 50 judging sheet suggests that there was a P19 engine then it is likely in error. I am the  tech advisor for 50 with the POC but I often  learn something new. In another part of the forum there is a discussion about trunk colours which suggests that there were some variations too.  The words always and never should be avoided.

David, back on the thread regarding trunk color I posted a question asking what the process (and requirements) are to have a judging standard set or changed.? ?My question was regarding the apparent body color paint that seems to have been factory stock on Evansville P18's in contrast to the blue-steel color on just about all of the others.? ?I guess that same question applies with this thread as well.? ? How do judging standards get added or amended?

I think I found it........in the club charter (Constitution).

"Clause B. The function of the Judging Director will be to ensure that the Club's Judging Guidelines are followed as closely as possible and that they are updated as necessary. The Judging Director does not serve as the Chief Judge.?

Section A. The Judging Director will update the Judging Guideline on a regular basis as changes or additions are made.

Section B. The Judging Director will contact new Technical Advisors to receive their comments for the year(s) they are acting as advisors for. These comments will be forwarded to the Technical Director for review and approval before making them part of the Judging Guide."

So, this seems to suggest that we would need to go through our technical advisor if we found something that we wished to have considered for inclusion in the Judging Guidelines?? ? ?Or, as a member can we submit our observations in writing directly to the Judging Director?

It has been many years since I have reviewed the judging standards for the '50. I will contact the appropriate people and have these amendments noted as well as do a general review.  Up to this point , there have been very few inquiries,  dp

Thanks David....a fresh review, at least on the 49 and 50's.....might be timely and stimulate a little useful discussion to the many "new" Plymouth owners out there.? ?Both the 49 and 50 cars seem to be becoming more in vogue.? ? The cost is still fairly low and the interest fairly high.? ? Or so it seems.?

The person to contact is Joe Suminski who is now the judging director.  Joe is currently updating the judging guides, so this information should be sent to him ASAP.  jsuminski2&yahoo.com

Just to add to the discussion...I pulled the engine #'s off the frame, and it does have a P20 prefix.
