Title: coupe vs coupe
Post by: oldguy on January 12, 2006, 01:21:20 PM
Another FNG question. There appears to be 2 different coupe body styles in the 42/46 era.  Looks like a bigger back window, and maybe bigger cab, with a shorter trunk on one version versus the other.  I don't want a "business coupe" with no back seat. Can someone enlighten me??

The business coupe has no back seat. Your regular coupe has a back seat. However, I have seen business coupes with back seats. Maybe put there by a previous owner?

So the small quarter window and long trunk must have been a business coupe, just wasn't identified as such.
Have seen references to a "jump seat", that must be a "business coupe" conversion/option.
Thanks for the tip.

Plymouth advertised & built two coupes in this period.  The business coupe and the "auxiliary seat coupe" -- some called it an opera coupe - then the name got changed to "club" coupe.  The business coupe had a single seat, room for 3 (very cozy) while the later club coupe offered room for five (well, really six, but the front middle seat passenger was now supposed to be in the back seat.)  The first "auxiliary" seat coupes had small fold out seats - not very comfortable except for small children - this gave way to the full rear seated "club" coupe.  You can tell a business coupe by the smaller rear quarter window.  Body code numbers from the 1940-41 era had the letters TPC in the body code, meaning "Two Passenger Coupe" while the auxiliary/opera/club coupe used the letters ASC (auxiliary seat coupe).  1946-48 no longer used the letter codes.  Body code numbers for 1946-48 coupes were 502 for Special Deluxe club coupes and 512 for Deluxe club coupes.  Business coupes in the Special Deluxe series had body code 503; Deluxe 513.

I am the owner a P-15 Club Coupe (Actually a 1949 Series 1)
(The "Plymouthsicke" photo at the top of the Officers page was also mine.)

To add to the other observations:

-The roof of the Business Cpe is shorter than the Club Coupe.
-There roof of the Business Cpe transitions smoothly with the trunk while there is a seam in the body between the roof & trunk on the Club Cpe, making the roof look more like a "Bubble".
-the rear window on the Business Cpe is resessed into the body, while the Club Cpe is almost flush witht he body.
