Dear all,
my wife and I are on holidays 16 days on Cote d' azur. Plymouth was loaded on Auto + sleeping car train at Dusseldorf sunday 22 July evening arriving Frejus station the following Monday 10:00 o clock a.m. We live at Juan le Pins and visited Nizza, Antibes, Vence, Cannes, Grasse - still having Menton and Monte Carlo on P 23' s schedule. We didn't know french Riviera well (been 1970 last time)- no wonder Hollywood celebrities come here. Some heat problems in one hour stop and go were easily overcome by opening throttle a bit more letting fan and waterpump running a bit faster. Last Wednesday on the ride back from Nizza Ply sufferd severe misfire problems. JuanAuto at Cannes diagnosed burned points and burned condenser. I usually have all parts with me- but the carried points and condenser were the worn ones fromlast year.... So, I had my friend send me my new ones from my Dusseldorf stock, arrived Monday.
Disappointing, none of 8 shops asked to, wanted to change my points that on at least the next day, so I did it myself in front of the hotel.. Should have taken 1 EURO per person looking and would have had my holiay bill paid...
With telefone help from my mechanic in Germany, all went well and 2 hours later Ply ran like new, first trial to Saint Tropez.
No, Sandra Bullock and the others were not on the same parking lot as me, they all live on ships owned to Mr. Cavalli, Dolce and Gabbana and others. Greetings! Go
sorry, my wife had to correct me, the lady I didn' meet at Saint Tropez yesterday was Cindy Crawford. Jack Nicholson is there too- didn' see him either....
Go,
You should consider putting a PERTRONIX "Ignitor" electronic module in your ignition. The electronic module with their Flame Thrower II coil will eliminate your point problems forever. You can also use a wider gap on your plugs which will improve the performance of your engine. There is no change to your ignition/distributer, a slight adjustment to the timing, and no one can tell there is anything changed. After the PERTRONIX has been running for ten years or so you might want to buy a new one to carry as a spare or carry a set of points and a condenser in case the module dies.
I have been using the PERTRONIX Ignitor modeule for years, I currently have them in the following cars.... '53 Pontiac, '56 Ford T-Bird, '57 Ford T-Bird, '59 Ford F-100, '63 Chrysler 300 and a '77 Ford 460 V8 running in a 24'day cruiser boat.
The only problem I have ever had with the PERTRONIX is when my mechanic would not believe the directions and tried to use a 6 volt coil in lieu of the 12v Flame Thrower that came with set for my '53 Pontiac.
*Per PERTRONIX... you have to use a 12v coil with their module because of the added resistance of the 6v system . On my '53 Pontiac, which is a 6v positive ground system like the Plyms, I contacted PERTRONIX direct because I was getting conflicting information from the venders, I then ordered the module and coil from Summit using the part numbers PERTRONIX gave me. I had to do the same thing on the 460 CID V8 in the boat because the ignition is a marine type Prest-o-light which does not use Ford points, etc....Bill
Go,
Your trip to France sounds like a neat way to travel... Put your car on the train, go beddy bye and wake up in the morning all refreshed and at your general destination....
I just returned from a 6,000 + mile trip/vacation in my motor home with my Jeep Cherokee hanging on the back bumper. We spent five weeks traveling from So. Cal to St Cloud MN and back with stops in Zion Nat Park, Brice Canyon, Mt Rushmore, the Bad Lands of SD... and..... MOORES in Rapid City SD. (could not resist buying a '49 Olds 88 2dr fastback while I was there)
We stopped in about every muesum, etc., that we encountered. After we left St Cloud we went due west via I-94 through North Dakota to my daughters place in Montana, then on to Seattle with a stop in Moses Lake WA where I bought a '31 Plym body for my '31. After a few days in Seattle we headed south down the coast of Washington and Oregon through the Redwoods..
I actually only drove for 13 days out of the five weeks, I sucked up a little over 650 gallons of diesel at an average price of $3.05 per gal.
William, nice to hear that You took the 31 body for Your project!
My mechanic has already taken a Pertronix unit, thanks for the hint with the 12 V coil. i DIDN't have the instructions yet.
nICE TO SEE A GROWN MAN' s Disney as You took another project toy at moores.... dO yOU PUT 3 trailers ???
Greetings! Go

You made it to within 45 minutes of my stomping ground! We are near Moses Lake. I just missed out on a great 1950 parts car (Craig's List) also from Moses Lake by a day. I was just out in the garden weeding and got to thinking that maybe you were the lucky recipient of the 50 but I see yours was a 31. It must be an old car gold mine out there in the Moses Lake sage brush (lol) Camille
Taking the Autotrain back Monday 4 pm brought us to D?sseldorf Tuesday 8 am. Diner had ac badly working with 100 F ( 37 C) , so we ate in the sleeping car. But we could sleep welll. Here are some Holiday shots. The Computer in our Hotel did not allow putting fotos (and had french key board with everything different, even dot and big / small letters, as You note in my earlier post)
As no legal parking was available, I had to plan the Carlton foto well: stone and paper to mark my standpoint, car to be stopped right at the lawn bed. You see Carlton Hotel, Cannes, Boulevard de la Croisette. I had hundreds of people at the intrance a moment before - awaiting a VIP I couln?d identify. Next shot are the steps showing all the premiazed Films at Cannes Film Festivals beginning 1945.
These shots are at Monaco, seeing th city of Monte Carlo in the background. Nicer however were Menton and Vance, which are not as tourist- crowded as the other cities are. We did ca. 200 miles in this beautiful mountain- and sea zone
Greetings ! Go
Did You notice the third stoplight? I just clip it on the trunk lid and have a cinch connecting plug inside. Is safer while driving german Autobahns and among franch desperado drivers.
Yes, the third Stoplight works on 6 V, I bought a 12 V one and changed the resistors plus the LED sequence to fit. Was not so difficult if someone helps You and knows electric soldering.
Go,
Thank you for the beautiful photos of Cannes and Monaco. It looks like that you and your wife had a
great trip. From your report, the autotrain is the way to travel in Europe.
Take care,
