Title: Still blowing oil~Any ideas?
Post by: samiam0821 on July 17, 2007, 04:03:48 AM
We have replaced both lines to the sealed oil filter can but is still blowing oil. The only thing I can think of is that the inside threads at the bottom of the can are stripped. Should we try replacing the can next? Andy's has one for $45.00. Any ideas of where I can get one even cheaper? Thanks, Camille

If it is blowing oil out past the threads are you sure you havn't crossed the threads . if they are not crossed have you tried thread seal tape. it is unlikely the inside thread on the canister is stripped unless the threads have been crossed at some time. eventually you will have to replace the canister as they are a sealed unit and are supossed to be replaced at about 8,000 miles

I made a mistake in saying that it was sealed. A disposable filter goes inside of it. The threads are not cross threaded now and it had been leaking oil from years before, but the leak is now much worse now. I am suspecting that at some point the threads may have been crossed? I teased my Husband after spending hours trying to get the line on if he had used anyting on the threads. Sounds lilke we should try that next? Thanks, Camille

I've had the same problem with my side mount oil filter and only a thick layer of plumbers teflon tape would finally seal the threads. The leak has been stopped for many years now. There are various thicknesses of teflon tape. I ended up with a thick pink colored type. The thin common white kind used on water pipes wasn't thick enough or strong enough. The thicker pink stuff may have been meant for oil and gas. I'm having a senior moment and can't remember where I bought the heavier pink tape. But I do remember it doesn't stretch and thin out like the common white stuff.

I think we may have it figured out? There is a brass fitting that is supposed to go in first and we are missing that. I will go check out my friends parts car tomorrow for the fitting. Camille
