Title: 1939 Plymouth Deluxe Engine Won't Turn
Post by: WRSW32A on July 12, 2007, 04:14:44 PM
Help and Answers Needed,

I have a 1939 Plymouth straight six engine that was in a barn since 1965. I purchased the automobile, replaces the carburator, the fuel pump and tried to fire-it-up. The engine would not turn over. The starter and battery acted as thou both were bad. I took step as follows: (1) ? Replaced both the starter and 6 volt battery. Both of them were re-built items. (2) Removed the spark plugs and placed a bottle cap of miricle oil over the cyclinders and let it set for a couple of days. (3) Placed the auto in gear, pulled the car approx. 1/2 mile and finally got it to start. After the miricle oil burned off, the car ran like a charm and no longer smoked.

Now, that the car has sat for approx. 3 years during my complete restroration, I now cannot get the engine to no longer rotate or turn over. Someone please help me with a new solution. What should I do to free the engine? Should I remove the cylinder head and pull the car? Should I remove the plugs and pull the car? Is it possible to turn the engine using a 12 volt battery?? Will a 12 volt battery damage the stater, regulator, etc? Any and all suggestions to a solution will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,

W. Wms.

If it was me.., after doing a complete restoration I would kinda like to know that the motor was in tip-top shape so I would probably pull the head, drop the oil pan, check the main bearings and cylinder walls, do a valve job and if everything looked good put in a new rear main seal, freeze plugs and gasket set.? ?O ya! Probably replace the water distribution tub and timing chain.? ? The good news is that you can do all this without removing the engine.

Or,

Drag it again and see if it will fire up.? After all it worked the first time you did it.

Chet?

I once had a 38 Desoto do that I found out the clutch was sticking  sort of rusted on temporary and it would not crank make sure you push in the clutch to get it cranking  If its stuck jack up the rear with safety stands and if it starts  hit the brakes and it will free it up  try that and if that does not work post your results

About the only reason an engine (which ran fine the last time it was switched off) is stuck would be rust in one or more cylinders. Since this has happened twice to this engine there is a good chance you have a leak in the head gasket which has allowed water into the cylinders.

Remove the clutch cover and try to turn the engine in either direction with a prybar against the flywheel teeth. If you get it to turn, oil up the cylinders and turn it over with the starter.  Only after it turns freely should you try to start it.  If you have a rusted up cylinder, you will cause significant damage to the piston if you do get if to start.  If it were mine, unless it  turns over with a minimum of fuss, I would be taking the head off for a closer look.
