Looking for a Picture of an engine hand crank for the 1929 Plymouth.? Most important is the correct size of the crank and would need a picture of the end that attaches to the motor.?
Reason,
I see these from time to time in all types of places including Antique Stores.? Basically I need to know what a Plymouth Engine crank looked like so that I can recognize one when I see it.? There are a half a dozen engine cranks on eBay but most people don't know for sure what car they were for.? Just something they found in the barn or the garage.
Any help would be appreciated,? Chet...
Hi Chet, A couple years ago, John Fain who is a member of this forum sent me dimensions and a picture of his hand crank. I have mislaid my info at this time and I have not found one either. Look up his member email and give him a jingle. He may help you out. Good luck, Bill

I believe I have what you need. Just so you know the pictures I have are of the original crank. I also have a spare that is much longer and safer. Someone has made it. The original crank comes out past the radiator but not past the bumper. The second one I ahve comes out past the bumper and I feel it would be much safer to use.
I hope these help

Chet here are two more

This looks like the type of hand crank that is designed only for slowly turning the motor when adjusting valves, with spark plugs removed.

From the parts book, Q and U used the same hand crank. The 30-U and PA used other, PB had its own, and PC, PD, PF shared one while PE had its own number.
I don't know about the other ones, but the hand crank for the PC, PD and PF can certainly be used to start the car. It isn't easy, and your engine must be in pretty good condition so it does not need to be turned over fast. But it can be done.

Dennis - Thanks for the pictures.
Bruce? - If this is not the crank to start the motor then what is the difference.?
Chet
This one is for starting the engine. Just be VERY VERY careful. If the engine kicks back a cast on your wrist will be next on your agenda. I have seen my father start my car with this crank.

Perhaps a description of that starting procedure would be helpful. All I have heard is to just "cup" your hand and do not put your thumb around the handle. That was from old time Ford Model T guys. Give one UPWARD pull only.

Bruce, are you going to make it on our tour Sunday? If so I can let you try your hand on the crank. . .

The handle for starting ,and adjusting the valves is the same handle, When i was a teenager this was the year car that we drove regularly and as we didnt have much money to replace them the batterys were usually in poor condition so we mostly had to crank start them. the procedure we usually used was ,leave the ignition off pull the choke and give the motor 1- 2 full turns with the handle, push the choke in and with the ignition still off slowly turn the handle till you feel the compression stroke, turn the ign on and give one quick pull up. if your points timing ,spark plugs etc are set right it should usually start first time. as bruce says be carefull how you hold the handle. I found the longer handle that came out past the bumper was the best, they usually had a bracket that was fitted to the bumper to help support it when you cranked the car otherwise the handle was liable to move up or down and damage the radiator surround where the handle went through
Elmo,
Thanks for the information.? All the theory in the world can?t hold a candle to experience. I have also been told to set the spark so that the plugs firer after TDC.? Makes sense to me in that this should ensure that the motor doesn?t kick in the wrong direction.
Thanks again, Chet? Student of ancient car technology.?
PS?? Please don?t take offence.? I truly think that in today?s world of IPhones and other gadgets it is important to understand what came before.? I for one would get a great thrill out of hand starting the old girl.

I'm sorry spark was one thing i forgot about (it's been a long time since i had to crank start a car ) yes if you retard it at the spark control on the steering wheel that will stop it kicking back, and easier to start. also set the hand throttle to a fast idle
