Title: Does anybody make a Hub Puller for the 28/29 Plymouth
Post by: chetbrz on July 09, 2007, 12:37:23 PM
I believe it screws onto the axle like the hubcaps and has a screw in the middle to apply pressure to the axle shaft.

I have been pulling my wheel for years without one.  I just loosen everything up and tap the back of the wheel with a 5 pound hammer.  It has worked everytime.

Thanks Dave,?

Most of mine came off OK except for one and with that one I used chain laced through the wheel and a bottle jack to crack the hub.? ?Both your method and mine puts a lot of stress on the wood spokes.? I have been looking for a device that can screw on the wheel hubs like the hub caps and then have a center screw that will apply pressure on the axle shaft.? I saw one once on eBay but wasn?t sure of the size of the hub threads, when I went back to look for it.., the auction closed early and it was gone.? If I can?t find one I am thinking of having one made.? That is if I can find a machine shop that can tap that size thread in a steel cap.

Dear Chet, I had a Pulle mader, following advice from this forum. Have to reweld it next autumn.
My puller broke, rear drums still didn?t move.... Go

I bought one from JCWhitney(LaSalle Il) and it worked quite well.? ?Uses three legs that attach to the studs.? Tighten it up good and tight and smack the end of the puller with a five pound hammer.? Works like a charm.

These types of pullers will not work on old Wood Spoke wheels.? I have a vintage wheel puller for my 48 Plymouth.? The 48 has lug bolts that you use to bolt the puller to the drum.? The wood spoke wheels do not use lug bolts.? There is no way to bolt this type of puller to the wheels or the drum.

Hi Chet, back in the 60's an old guy helped me with mine being a young guy at the time. The part he used was a threaded piece of steel. It has inside threads and a 4 inch stock to tap a rubber or wood mallet on the end. It pushes the axle in about 3'4 to 1 inch. and the wood wheel and hub fall off. I have always used this tool to take the back hubs off my axles. I may be able to send you a picture to you email address. Let me know. at

If you can losen the lock nut  take it off and use pb blaster spray in there  , then try to double nut the thread and and leave some threads exposed then  take it on a bumpy road 2 or 3 miles per hour  on the speedo! Keep working it with the pb blaster I use it and sometimes overnight it will soak in those problem areas good luck

Darren & Bill thanks for the suggestions.

Bill are you sure about the 3/4 to 1 inch of endplay.  This sounds like a little to much but I am not all that familiar with the 29 differential.  I passed on your advice to a fellow 29 owner who is having trouble removing his rear wheels.  My assumption is that both rear wheels need to be off the ground.

Tks,  Chet...

Hi Chet, This is a picture of the tool that I use to get my rear wheels off. It just screws on the axle and you hit it with a hammer gently. The wheel just falls off. To get the wheel back on, you just put the nut back on and it pulls the wheel back on tight. Make sure the keyway is aligned up straight.

Chet,

Ebay has a "Used, K-OUT Wheel Puller by Sherman Klive" that may be what you are looking for.

Chet, Here is a photo of the most effective tool for the job. They come in all different thread sizes for different cars, but lucky for us the Ford model A used the same thread size, so they are not impossible to find. I carry a hub in my cart at Hershey so I can buy the correct ones. I can pick one up for you in October if you would like. The other style works as well, but you need to jack up the other side of the axle, so the axle can be shifted out. I would not recommend using a hammer on the the threaded axle end, it will splay out the threads, and I have not had success with trying other strap and pry methods. This tools makes it a 30 second job.The second item is the correct spanner wrench for removing the hub caps without damage.

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone knows the thread size of the required wheel removal tool?

I have seen some on ebay marked 2-1/4" diameter, but with various thread sizes.  I checked my hubs on the 28 Q today and they apopear to be the 2-1/4" diameter, but i have no way of schecking thread size.  I have seen 16, 18 and 20 specified by some sellers.  Which is correct?

Thanks,
Chris

It's #16 thread the diamiter is 2& 3/8", I think. I am just putting a caliper over the hub to get the diamiter

I'll confirm 16 threads per inch for sure.? 2 & 3/8" sounds good.? I know it is not 2 & 1/4.?

Looking with a ruler it appears to be 2 & 5/16" across the threads but my puller can be adjusted slightly.? ?I took Pat's advice and brought a wheel with me to the last Hershey swap meet and found one that fit.

Here again it was marked FORD on the tool.? Don?t know which year ford ??

Hope this helps a little,? Chet...

Here is the scoop on the Q/U hub size:? Doug you were right on?

When measuring threads there are two dimensions to consider.? The Minor or female thread size and the Major or male Tap size.

If you measure the diameter of the wheel hub it will measure 2.375 +- 5% or 2 & 3/8? Major Dimension
If you measure the tool itself or the female thread size it should measure 2.312 +- 5% or 2 & 5/16? Minor Dimension

Since screw size is always refereed to by the Major Dimension then the correct size for the 28Q to 30U hub puller is? 2 & 3/8? with 16 threads per inch.

So if an eBay seller is measuring the distance accross the threads on the hub puller in question (Minor Dimension) he should be measuring 2 & 5/16? x 16 TPI
