Title: 30U Progress being made ........
Post by: 30U sedan on July 06, 2007, 12:18:57 AM
Here are pictures of last weekends progress. Dash is in with all gauges still working after being taken apart, cleaned, painted, ect.....  I was a little worried about them. You may notice new numbers on the speedo thanks to a company that sells Model A parts. It turns out that many Model A's used the same type of speedo.

Hope to get alot done this weekend and will post updates at that time............

don?t forget to put a good sealant between both windshield- glass -and- rubber- gasket and gasket- and -body. I did trust the rubber alone and had  water inside the window. Luckily this was very soon, so I redid all the work and the body did not stay wet for long.
You sure can?t wait the moment to drive Your beauty!! Greetings ! Go

Your car is coming along Great.!!!!  I am not surprised about the speedometer.   Car manufactures in those days bought off the shelf parts rather then exclusively owning the part manufactures.  Made auto parts logistics less complicated.

Thanks for the advice. I will add the sealer between the body and rubber parts for sure. I'm hoping to find a windshield regulator so I can roll the windshield up and down. Any ideas where I might find one???
I ordered new glass yesterday from Smith's Rod Glass (advertizes on E-Bay). Should receive it in 4-6 weeks and will let you know about quality, service, ect. at that time.

Smithy is a good guy,? I ordered glass from him about a year and a half ago.? Well packaged and cut perfectly.?

For what it?s worth you have my recommendation.

Chet?

PS...  In your picture below shouldn't the speedometer be on the left and the ignition on the right or was it changed around with the 30-U

Thanks for info on Smithy. I should have asked the forum before I ordered.

The speedometer is in the correct location. I also thought it should have been the other way.

That is interesting in that the 28-Q and the 29-U had the speedo on the left.? I wonder why they decided to move it to the right on the 30-U.? I currently can't find my parts reference manual but I am sure you are correct.

In any event your car is looking great.., I mean really Great.!!!?

Chet?

You are correct about the 28 and 29 models. In Plymouth Master Parts List (April 1, 1934 edition) page 23-2 shows the location of all of the gauges for the 30U. It shows speedometer on the right. Page 23-1 shows the speedometer on the left for the 28Q and the 29U. Makes you wonder why the change.........

Had a chance to get some work done on the 30U this past weekend. Coated the inside flooring with truck bed liner (sound dampener and extra protection). Also installed the plywood floor boards and cut some panels for the inside of the front doors.

Your car is looking GREAT. I wish my 28 was that far along. Looks like it will be setting in the garage all alone until this winter.

Great job with the car

The cars looking good. Many people are unaware of the proper bumper mount components. I thought I would post this pic for everyones benefit. There is a stainless finish piece that goes over the retainer bracket. If you look close, there is a ridge that it sits flush into the bracket with. The attachment bolt is a stainless wrapped head carriage bolt. The bracket itself is painted, not chromed. Also, it appears you are in need of a proper Flite Tail lamp can. Let me know, and I will supply you with one at a very fair price as a fellow 30-U enthusiast.

Thanks for the info....
I don't know if you can tell by the pictures, but the bumpers are in need of chrome plating. All of the parts are painted with chrome paint now (chrome is expensive :(). Hoping to get chroming done later and will keep this in mind so as to do it correctly.

I have been looking around for the tail light assy. The one I currently have looks like it may have come off of a boat trailer :'(.
I would be interested in hearing what you have that can help me with this. What does the correct tail light look like? I have seen some with "Plymouth" on them, but I think they belong to a later model....

Here is a photo of the tail light components that you are looking for. The bell is steel on a 30, with a chrome plated brass bezel. Originally the interior cork and metal trim were open hole riveted to the glass and bezel, then you screwed that unit to the bell tabs. Now you just run the screw through all four pieces separately. Note the originals have a recess in the bezel where the screws attach. Thats where the rivet was, the after market bezels are just flat in that area. The top of the bell is stamped "Filite". I am also attaching a pic of the correct exterior door handles. I could not tell if yours were correct or not.

Thanks Patrick,

This helps alot. If you have an extra tail lite assembly and want to sell it let me know.

My e-mail is dalewilly@yahoo. com.

As for the door handles, the ones on the car at this time are modified Model A handles. These are temperary handles that I will use until my original handles can be re-chromed.

I'm currently in Detroit, MI. on business and won't be back home until Sunday evening.
Next weekend, Baltamore, MD, then Vegas, ect........ so don't know when I can get back at it.

Seb, Here are the firewall plaques that you are looking for. There are people already reproducing them, so you do not have to make them unless you just enjoy the extra challenge.
