I am having the flywheel on my '41 resurfaced as part of a complete rebuild of the clutch. The ring gear has typical wear on the side that engages the starter. The rebuild shop suggests flipping the ring gear. They do not think there is a need to replace the gear. Any thoughts about the disadvantages of flipping the ring gear. Is there any advantage to replacing the ring gear? I see NOS gears are availalbe for $40-$80.
Thanks for our thoughts.
Mark.
I flipped both on mine. Never had any troubles since.
I now step on the starter pedal with a bit more positive force than I feel was applied many years ago. This tends to mesh the gears a bit better than a lighter touch. I found that the flywheel is not "wearing" at all now.
My two cents worth.
