Title: P22-P23 Dome light switch ****Found it****
Post by: jd2ksilver on January 02, 2006, 09:30:09 PM
In my manual it describes a dome light switch located on right door jam along with the pillar switch.? The same goes for the wiring diagrams. I was able to clean up the pillar switch contacts and got the light to work.? However I cannot locate on either door jam the other switch.? I am pretty sure this was a option?.? If anyone has knowledge or a picture to locate where the switch should be located I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

this just from my memory which isn't as good as it used tobe.  but it seems like i recall  a vertical sliding switch in the headliner about where the anchor point for a shoulder belt would be.  with that location in mind, does your service manual have any interior shots?  I don't have any that new or i would look

John,

Yes there is one there, called the pillar switch.  I did get that one working all right.  But the wiring schematics call for a door jam switch also, which I cannot locate on my front door jams anywhere.  I would like the light to come on when I open the door.  It may have been a option?  The manual I have list the wiring diagram but no pictures of the door jam switch itself.

Thanks for the input

That one as I recall is a silver spring loaded button between the hinges about where the metal strap that keeps the door from opening too far.

These cars have only one door-operated dome light switch.? Look at the Phillips-head hinge attaching screws on the A-pillar of the right front door.? One of them contains the switch, which pops out when the door is opened.

Yes, I checked those areas, no dice.  I guess mine didn't come with one.  I am intending to put one at least in.  If anyone can show a pic of theirs, if they have a 51-52, I would appreciate it. Thanks for all the input

I knew it had to be there somewhere.  I started scraping away paint on the jam screws and what do you know.  It is on the top left screw of the passenger door.  (now I know what the manual says when describing the right door)

I bought a replacement on Ebay and it works great.  I think I'm going to wire one for the drivers side too.
Thank you all for the direction.

Old versus new switch

It seemed kind of strange that the car didn't have a door switch.? They were standard on Cranbrooks in '52.? Glad you found it.

It might be a project to install a switch on the driver's door.? The wire for the passenger's side switch comes around the top of the door opening and approaches the hinge from the top.? The only way I can think of to splice onto that wire is if you remove the kick panel then run the new wire across the car under the dash.? The alternative is to remove the headliner and windlace...very tricky!

Keep us posted on your progress.

Finally got around to doing it.? I did what you suggested Captain, ran it under the dash to the other side.? Gives me practice when swapping to 12 volt system.? Every wire touched was brittle.

Thanks for the help.? 8)

Where did you get the new door switches and what is the thread size?  I'd like to put door switches in my P6 BC but I don't want to drill the jams to use the modern type.  These screw/switches are cool (and an easily reversible modification) - assuming the threads are the same.

Same thread size as the original screw.  I got them off ebay, under 52 plymouth, but they are around if you look.  I am thinking they fit many cars.

Good luck
