Thanks for the information about the need for the tapped head bolt in position 1.  Now I need to find one of those bolts.  Any ideas out there?  I would like to find at least one (NOS if possible or used in good condition) that I can use for display of a completely original engine.

I'll have to concur regarding the gearbox wear issue.

The most practical way to deal with this is to look for a good serviceable used gearbox, and keep the car in service until the replacement box is ready, at which point its only a two or three hour job to change out the box.

It would be a good idea to replace the universals at that time, since the driveshaft will be out, which means either having a suitable press available or having made arrangements with some specialist shop to press the universal pins for you.

When an allegedly serviceable 'good used' gearbox is found, pull it down and inspect the internal components. If all looks well, re-assemble it, preferable with a new 'small parts kit' of needle-bearings, new ball bearings on the first motion shaft and main-shaft, and, of course, new gaskets.

If it were my car, I'd take the time to find......and, however reluctantly, pay the high price, if needs be......for an 'overdrive' box, as having the overdrive makes the car much more pleasant on the road. I've fitted a few of these, at one time and another, just making up a suitable little fitting to mount a simple push-pull switch on the gear lever for the overdrive electrical control. The bowden cable for the overdrive lock-out can be mounted as it normally is done on the later cars, with a bit of suitable re-enforcement made for its mounting.....thats an easy job, actually.

cheers

captbrian:
Transmission problem is almost certainly wear in the synchroniser assembly and/or the bearing between the input shaft and the main shaft. It is very unlikely that it is a linkage problem. In my experience this problem is quite rare in Chryco products (as opposed to Ford) so I expect the synchronisers are very badly worn.

re captbrian's transmission problem.   I am sure this is not welcome news but your dropping out of second gear problem will be found in the synchronizer assembly or in the bearing between the input shaft and the main shaft. It is a classic sign of internal wear.  It may be possible to lessen the problem by increasing pressure on the lower shift rail detents. Remove the lower threaded plug on the front of the shift cover and place several small washers in the plug to increase pressure on the spring. This can be done easily without removing the transmission.

tapped bolt #1, that is, the middle bolt between #3and#4 cylinders is for the air cleaner support in 41. The other two support the throttle linkage pivot .

My P23 uses the #1 bolt as ground point for the battery cable. Didn?t find any foto in service manual or parts book to proof the originality of this. Greetinigs! Go

I cheked my 201 and noticed that the tapped bolt for #1 is in the #18 position on the head and not being used. Perhaps #1 is for the the air cleaner and not one of the tapped bolts holding the throttle linkage. It looks like the bracket for the air cleaner would have a better angle and pull on the air cleaner if it was in the #1 position. I am having trouble with my shift linkage as the trans falls out of second gear when you let off of the gas after having shifted into second eg: going into a turn and then accelerating. I noticed a spring around the shifting shaft that appears to hold up the second gear linkage is broken and I wonder if you know of this problem?
thanks, captbrian41

The parts list for the 201 engine in my '41 coupe indicates there are three tapped head bolts.  The bolts are shown in positions 1, 2 and 8 on the cylinder head tightening sequence chart.  My engine only has two tapped head bolts.  All of the bolts seem to be original.  What was the tapped bolt in position 1 used for?  That is the one that is not present on my engine.  The other two are used for the air cleaner support and throttle linkage bracket.
